Rancho Solano (Men/Par 71-Women/Par 72)May 10, 2008 The inaugural HP West Coast Team Challenge was won by hpGA! It came down to our anchor team needing to secure at least one-half point in their match and they were up to the task. The first match involving Ken Findley and Don Myers ended up a draw with each side getting 1-1/2 points. Then hpGA came on strong, with Bill Sheaffer and Mike Mason getting all 3 points, and then the teams of Michael Collins and Mandeep Gill, and Phil Hermanson and Dave Kasberg each getting 2-1/2 points. But HP-SVGC came roaring back, (as Bob Brand, Rod Butler, Holden Markle and Joe Woods ran into some real great performances), taking 2-1/2 points in each of the next two matches to pull back to within one point of hpGA. Chuck Davis and Dan Duryea righted the ship in the penultimate match by winning 2-1/2 points and setting up Steve Hopson and Sung Oh to clinch the title. The format was four-ball match play. In each match all players played their own ball and the team score was the lowest net score of the two players. The hole was won by the team with the lower net score. One point was available for winning the front nine, one for the back nine, and one for winning over the 18 holes. Half points were awarded for ties. There were prizes for closest-to-the-pin on all the par-3s, and a long drive for men and one for women. HP-SVGC won all but one of those prizes, which went to Phil Hermanson for a closest-to-the-pin, to the best of this reporter's recollection. Congratulations to all!
